What We Do

The Office of Research & Scholarship provides leadership and oversight for the following initiatives:

• Provision of a well-established and solid administrative infrastructure by which to seek out and secure funding among novice to seasoned SON investigators
• Guidance with the preparation of research proposals and submissions
• Serve as a liaison/point of contact with the UAB Office of Sponsored Research Programs and the external funding agencies
• Guidance in pre-award and post-award grant and project management
• Provide development enrichment programs to support faculty across the School's missions

Since 1979, the ORS/CNR has actively engaged in facilitating those research partnerships and continues into the present-day in by supporting our faculty as leaders in nursing research and scholarship. The SON faculty are partners in a wide scope of inter-disciplinary research including, but not limited to, interventions to improve transitional care in chronic illness, interventions to improve outcomes via health education/promotion, tele-health interventions in disease management and health promotion, reduction of obesity in children and adolescents, patient safety strategies to improve the practice environment, and partnerships for education research coordination.

Ever mindful to stay focused on our vision - to be a dynamic and innovative research leaders, the leadership and staff within the ORS strive to be responsive to the needs of our faculty and to assist in creating partnerships that results in the successful conduct of the research and to raise the quality of health care while expanding the educated nursing workforce in Alabama and worldwide.

As we look ahead to the next few years- we will be working towards fulfilling the goals of our 2012-2017 strategic plan;

• To Expand mechanisms to recognize and celebrate the scholarship of faculty, students, alumni, and partners
• Increase leadership roles of UAB Nursing faculty in UWIRCs
• Recruit and retain faculty with established programs of research

The UAB School of Nursing offers innovative bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Among these are the state’s only PhD in Nursing degree and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree which offers BSN, MSN and Nurse Anesthesia Pathways, more than 15 specialty and subspecialty nurse practitioner tracks, dual degree options, advanced nursing executive majors in administration and informatics, and an Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP) program for students who already have one degree. Some courses are taught completely in a distance-accessible format, where students can complete course requirements without traveling to the campus and some courses have online content combined with live, on-campus sessions.

The UAB School of Nursing offers students opportunities to learn and investigate with interprofessional faculty and student teams from nursing, medicine, dentistry, health professions, public health and optometry. Students and faculty have options for substantial  scholarships, fellowships and grant awards to support undergraduate and graduate study. 

Through the school’s Pan American World Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for International Nursing and the Sparkman Center for Global Health, students and faculty are exposed to interdisciplinary clinical and research opportunities on UAB's campus and across the globe. Veterans CAN!

The UAB School of Nursing is offering a special program, Veterans Career Advancement in Nursing Program (Veterans CAN!), through the Health Research Services Administration (HRSA), to veterans who served as a LPN or medic/corpsman in the military to transition into a professional nursing career and earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing. 

VA National Quality Scholars Program

The Birmingham VA Medical Center is 1 of 8 VA National Quality Scholars Program (VAQS) sites in the U.S. Pat Patrician, PhD, RN, FAAN and Carlos Estrada, MD, MS serve as senior scholars for the Birmingham site. VAQS promotes leadership in quality improvement research and emphasizes interprofessional learning. The program offers fellowships to pre and post doctoral nurses.

  Business Intelligence

 

Business Intelligence does not have to be complex. CTS believes that large data warehousing efforts should be divided into several small iterations. We call this Evolutionary Data Warehouse or EVOLVE.  This process allows the project and the data to evolve.

Therapy South was founded in July 2006 by Steve Foster, PT. His vision was that Therapy South would be a therapist-owned practice, specializing in "hands-on care, close to patient's home or work". Clinics placed in Central Alabama, Auburn and Athens, GA maintain an informal atmosphere that helps patients feel at home in their surroundings. Having 20 locations, allows patients to conveniently attend physical therapy two to three times per week to improve their daily functions. We know our patients names when they walk in the door of our clinics!

Clinical excellence is the foundation of our successful patient outcomes. Many of our therapists have advanced certification in orthopedic physical therapy, as well as other specialty areas including manual therapy, women's health, orthotics and hand therapy/occupational therapy.

                                           Manual Therapy

Mobilization is the skilled passive movement to a joint and/or related soft tissues performed to relieve pain and increase mobility. Manipulation is also skilled passive movement to a joint, similar to mobilization, but it is performed more quickly. Manipulation is often associated with an audible 'pop'. Both mobilizations and manipulations are performed by the physical therapist to improve joint range of motion and relieve pain. Each patient will be evaluated for the appropriate manual therapy techniques for their dysfunction. We combine a caring touch with skilled techniques to reduce pain and increase mobility. Many of our therapists carry certifications in manual therapy/strength and conditioning/athletics, or are board-certified in orthopedics.
